Crash resulted in injuries, DWI charges

On Behalf of | Jan 17, 2022 | DWI

A group of people ranging in ages from 15 to 44 reportedly attended a UFC event at a public venue before getting into the same vehicle to travel after the show. The 15-year-old later spoke to police saying he was initially planning on driving, when the older gentleman that was with him took the keys and got behind the wheel instead. There was a collision, and the vehicle came to a halt on its roof. The driver is now facing felony DWI charges.

Investigators were told that the driver swerved to avoid hitting an animal

The case is still under investigation. However, preliminary investigations show that the driver told police that he had swerved to avoid hitting an animal in the roadway. The sudden maneuver apparently caused him to lose control of steering and the car rolled.

Numerous people suffered injuries in the collision

Rescuers had to extricate the driver from the vehicle. He suffered a broken neck. Several passengers were transported to a local hospital for emergency care, as well. The 15-year-old’s injuries were minor. The driver is facing one felony DWI charge and three gross misdemeanor charges for vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm to others.

Juvenile told police he was unrestrained inside the vehicle

The teenager said that he was not wearing a seatbelt when the vehicle crashed. He also told police that he believes several other passengers were not using seat restraints at the time. Police claim that the driver’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit for driving in Minnesota. Most people facing felony DWI charges like the man in this case seek legal consultation before heading to court to explore what types of defense options are available to help mitigate their circumstances.
